A CNBC article reports that the IRS does not allow the usual business deductions under section 280E. While the federal tax code allows deductions for the cost of growing recreational marijuana in Washington and Colorado, it does not allow deductions for the cost of selling it.

Employees

The marijuana industry is growing fast, and Esquire reports that jobs in the industry are everywhere. The challenge, however, is meeting special personnel requirements and finding employees who fit in with the company culture.

Associations

A marijuana business may benefit greatly from supporting or joining associations, organizations, federations, and clubs that promote an interest in the marijuana industry. There are numerous groups to choose from, including the National Cannabis Industry Association, NORML, and High Times.

Legality

There is always the risk of federal prosecution, even if marijuana is legal in a particular state. Although federal prohibition is not enforced on a state level, this may change at any point in time. A contingency plan must be developed in order to protect a business from a change in circumstances.

Competition

According to The Milbank Quarterly, tobacco companies have expressed interest in marijuana and marijuana legalization since the 1970s, and are modifying corporate planning strategies to prepare for consumer demand in the future. At present, big drugstore chains, cigarette companies, and other large businesses are forbidden from entering the still-developing marijuana market. At some point, however, this may change when the market normalizes and they wipe out small marijuana businesses.

A Thousand Gallons of Water Required to Make One T-shirt Reports Sharon Kleyne Hour

The manufacture of a single t-shirt requires an estimated one-thousand gallons of fresh water, including water to grow the cotton. That fact was reported on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show by author Brian Clark Howard. As global fresh water shortages and drought continue to increase, show host Kleyne wondered how much progress, if any, has been made in the use of water in t-shirt making, and in water conservation in general, since it was originally discussed on her show.

Regarding water and t-shirts, Kleyne discovered, there has been progress, but not nearly enough. Kleyne’s overall conclusion, after considerable investigation, was that we might not even be asking the right questions. A better question, says Kleyne, is “how many t-shirts can be made by recycling the same 1,000 gallons?”

Growing cotton, according to Kleyne’s recent investigation, requires sunshine and warm weather but only a moderate amount of water. Cotton lends itself to irrigation in desert areas, which is why cotton is a major crop in California’s Imperial Valley, Southern Great Plains, and Egypt.

Cotton is also well suited for dry land farming, Kleyne discovered. In this method, organic mulch is used to retain water while pesticides and irrigation are not required. A recent Huffington Post article, says Kleyne, stated that a t-shirt made of hemp fiber required “500 fewer gallons of water” to produce than a cotton t-shirt (Schroeder, E, “The ‘Other’ Hemp,” Huffington Post, June 3, 2014. The article provided no reference citations). Hemp plants were described in the article as “highly drought and pest resistant.”

While fresh water conservation is desirable during a water shortage, Kleyne believes that in many areas, cutting back on water may be unwise. Kleyne adamantly believes that the human body, for example, requires at least eight glasses of fresh water a day and that any less is foolish and dangerous. However, says Kleyne, it is theoretically possible to recycle and purify most of the water in those eight glasses so that the same water may be reused at a later dater.    

Since the Howard interview, the ongoing California drought has substantially deepened and the nation’s most agriculturally productive state, supported by a vast and complex network of dams, reservoirs and aqueducts, is on the verge of failing. Kleyne continues to believe, in 2014, that although water conservation is crucial, especially during a water shortage, water recycling is even more important. Kleyne has observed that when crops are irrigated, even with drip irrigation, the vast majority of the water is not used by crop plants and either soaks into the ground, runs off or evaporates. That unused water, says Kleyne, could be captured and recycled over and over.    

Kleyne also believes that fresh water for personal consumption and sanitation should be free or virtually free and that providing safe and abundant water is one of the most important functions of government to stimulate economic growth and assure a healthy population.

Winners were supposed to be named at the end of 2014, but officials are still screening applicants.

The medicinal cannabis industry in Nevada is expected to give tourists another reason to visit Sin City due to a reciprocity law that allows tourist with MMJ cards to acquire medical marijuana when visiting the state. Patients from anywhere in the country, therefore, can be served. The state recently granted 55 dispensary licenses, plus over 300 various types of permits for cannabis businesses. Of course, lawsuits and controversies over licensing still exist, which could possibly delay the opening of a number of businesses.

Republican Control

When voters in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington DC approved recreational marijuana in November, they also voted in enough Republican candidates to have the GOP control both the Senate and the House.

Republicans now in control may possibly affect how the industry moves forward, as it is widely known that the views of conservatives are less friendly compared to their liberal counterparts. An article in Brookings, however, points out that unlike most issues – marijuana policy does not fall neatly along party lines. Some Democrats and Republicans support it, while other Democrats and Republicans oppose it. For now, businesses will simply have to wait and see how Republicans response to cannabis at the federal level.

The Rise of Business Accelerators

Business accelerators, considered key components in industries such as agriculture and technology, help create the needed infrastructure for budding entrepreneurs and business to thrive. Accelerators offer multiple forms of support, such as mentoring, investment, and networking. These services are crucial to the development of the marijuana industry, and are particularly practical for startup companies that lack a business plan, capital, or even a basic understanding of the business.

According to a BizWest article, twenty companies will be selected for aid in 2015, and will be given $ 20,000 in seed capital and numerous support services. Mentoring will be provided in exchange for ArcView’s and CanopyBoulder’s 9.5 percent equity stake in each company that participates.
