Oaksterdam University to Host Grow Medicine Marijuana Training Featuring Rhode Island Native, Medical Marijuana Expert and Activist Todd McCormick on August 15 to 17

Providence, Rhode Island (PRWEB) August 13, 2014

Rhode Island’s amended medical marijuana law takes effect September 1, 2014, opening up opportunities for caregivers new to the industry needing legal and medicinal quality marijuana education. To help fill the information gap for existing and prospective medical marijuana caregivers, Oaksterdam University (OU) is hosting a three-day seminar led by medical marijuana and industrial hemp expert, respected activist, and Rhode Island native Todd McCormick.

The event, called Grow Medicine, will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center on August 15, 16 and 17 going from 10 am to 6 pm each day, and will cover everything from seed to sale in three one-day presentations. Topics covered include an overview of cannabis sativa, advanced and commercial cultivation with a focus on the Dutch Method, and hashish extracts.

“People are seeking information they can trust from reliable sources with demonstrable backgrounds in the cannabis industry. Participants in professional cannabis education are quickly becoming the leaders in this emerging industry,” said McCormick, when asked why it was important to attend. “We choose my home state of Rhode Island not just because it is where I grew up, but also because according to recent statistics, it has the highest concentration of tokers in the entire United States!”

In response to why OU is hosting GrowMedicine, Executive Chancellor Dale Sky Jones said, “OU offers students the chance to learn about this controversial plant, and creates an interesting blend of individuals and opportunity. We welcome diverse students who want to change careers or simply brush up on their horticulture skills. OU also attracts business owners who want to train their staff, folks who want to open their own business, and patients trying to understand the law and their rights.”

About Todd McCormick: McCormick spent most of his young life in the children’s ward of Rhode Island Hospital battling Histiocytosis X, a rare form of cancer. He experienced multiple rounds of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. When he was nine, his mother chose to give him cannabis as anti-nausea to help with side-effect of his treatment, which had amazing results for him.

McCormick began cultivating his own medicine in 1984, which was the beginning of a new career in cannabis—-one that has taken him around the world advocating for its benefits. His first book, How to Grow Medical Marijuana was released in 1998. He was also the editor of the 12th edition of The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer and produced the book PROTESTIVAL: A 20 Year Retrospective of Seattle Hempfest. He co-produced fundraisers for the Marijuana Policy Project at the Playboy Mansion in 2007, 2008 and 2009; then in 2009 he produced the THC EXPO at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

McCormick also appeared in the documentary, THE UNION: the business behind getting high and is executive producer of the follow-up documentary titled, THE CULTURE HIGH, which will be released this summer. His next book GrowMEDICINE will also be published this year. He maintains a community website called HEMP.xxx.

About Oaksterdam University: Since 2007, Oaksterdam University has provided quality training about cannabis and marijuana policy reform for over 18,000 students at several campuses in the United States. OU is America’s first cannabis college, a forerunner in providing the highest quality training to people interested in a career in the cannabis industry, and the first institution to address the growing needs of the marijuana movement, from patients to regulators. OU’s faculty is comprised of professionals, academics and many of the most recognized names in the cannabis industry.

To schedule an interview with Todd McCormick or Dale Sky Jones, please call (510) 251-1544 or email events(at)oaksterdamuniversity(dot)com. Onsite interviews in Rhode Island on the day before and the first day of the seminar are available.

Footage of First WA State Recreational Marijuana Edibles & Concentrates Sales Published by Ganjapreneur.com

posted in: US Hemp Co 0

Bellingham, WA (PRWEB) August 08, 2014

On August 6th, Top Shelf Cannabis in Bellingham, WA made history as the first retailer in the state’s recreational marijuana market to sell edible and concentrated products to consumers. With several news networks in attendance and a long line of eager customers outside, Top Shelf was set to receive their first delivery of non-flower products at 10:00 pm, and had committed to staying open until midnight (the latest allowable hour to sell cannabis products in Washington’s legal market) to serve those who had come to participate in the historic event.

As 10:00 p.m. came and passed, and the products had still not been delivered, the news media in attendance were forced to pack up and leave in order to meet their broadcast deadline before the first transaction was made. Luckily, representatives from Ganjapreneur, a cannabis industry media start-up, were also there to document the occasion. The delivery finally arrived at about 10:40 p.m., giving the major networks just enough time to film the products being unloaded and sorted before hurrying out the door to meet their deadline. Ganjapreneur’s film crew stayed at Top Shelf the rest of the evening to document the experience, and uploaded the footage to their website and YouTube channel on Thursday.

The edible products that were sold on Wednesday were savory snacks, including infused trail mix and nut clusters made by Green Chief, a processor licensed by Washington State which will also be providing edibles to several other retail stores in the region. There was also a pre-loaded vaporizer system that sold for close to $ 100 per unit, manufactured by Rif, another state-licensed processor.

Last month, Top Shelf Cannabis also made history as the first retailer to sell cannabis flowers in the legal market on July 8th. Since then, the store has received several shipments of flowers that have quickly sold out. Within the next week, Top Shelf is expecting a shipment of 50 pounds of cannabis flowers that they hope will allow them to operate continuously until the next shipment without limiting the purchases of their customers.

Ganjapreneur is a website dedicated to keeping aspiring “ganjapreneurs” up to date on the latest business news and developments in the recreational cannabis, medical marijuana, and industrial hemp industries. The website publishes original articles as well as curated news from around the web, and also conducts in-depth interviews with established business owners.

Andrew DeAngelo Headlines Marijuana Entrepreneur Training Event

Portland, OR (PRWEB) September 08, 2014

In addition to learning how to start and run a successful legal marijuana business, attendees of the Marijuana Entrepreneur Training Event and Expo on September 30 will have the rare opportunity of asking Andrew DeAngelo questions during the question-and-answer segment of the program as well as network with him and the other speakers at the cocktail party following the event.

While in graduate school in 1991, Andrew DeAngelo helped collect signatures for Proposition P, which legalized medical cannabis in the City of San Francisco, the first such law passed by any jurisdiction in the United States. Building on this momentum, Andrew then helped organize for Proposition 215, which legalized medical cannabis in the State of California in 1996, the first state to do so. Shortly after he graduated, Andrew was diagnosed with glaucoma and moved back to Washington D.C to be closer to his family.

Andrew and his brother Steve continued their pursuit of changing medical cannabis laws by raising funds, collecting signatures, and eventually passing Initiative 59, a medical cannabis legalization law in the City of Washington, D.C., in November 1998. He and his brother also established Ecolution Inc., a hemp clothing company in the 1990s, and helped Ecolution grow to over $ 1 Million in annual revenue. They sold it when they decided to return to California.

Now he is Vice President of Harborside Health Center in Oakland, California, which was the first medical cannabis dispensary in the world to lab test all their medicine, put their infused products into child-proof packaging, and develop inventory control and security protocols that are the industry standard today. Harborside Health Center has been featured in numerous media outlets including the New York Times, Fortune Magazine, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal.

Things are changing fast in the cannabis industry. Medical Marijuana is now legal in 23 states, and additional states have pending legislation. Cannabis Learning Institute knows this is an outstanding ground-floor opportunity for entrepreneurs. Therefore they have created a series of Marijuana Entrepreneur Training Event and Expos throughout the country which show exactly how to start and run a successful legal marijuana business.

These events teach what’s legal and what’s not; what the startup business requirements are in each state; and how to safely manage and market the new business.

Go to the Cannabis Learning Institute’s website at CannabisLearningInstitute.com to see the fall schedule of locations and dates for the Marijuana Entrepreneur Training Event and Expo, and how to sign up for the Portland event to learn from Andrew DeAngelo and an exciting line-up of speakers.

Those who are interested in additional information about these events can also contact Rocky Narain by e-mail or call him at 954-296-1004.

You can check online to look for dispensaries that could match your lifestyle and medical needs.

You can also ask friends about legal establishments that are selling Below are some ways you can do to find the most sought after dispensaries in the region. Just check them out;

A. Go online – Dispensaries have website and through it, you can check their exact location and when you have done it, you may start purchasing their products for your medical needs.

B. Survey your area or location – You can actually roam the whole of Sacramento and ask people who may know about medical dispensaries and dispensary products. This happens because the use of medical cannabis as an alternative aren’t fully legalize in Sacramento and in the whole of California. Cannabis dispensaries are usually located in any commercial areas, this is under the provision by the state department that was implemented few years ago.

C. Ask your local caregivers about dispensaries – You may know cannabis caregivers who might working for a dispensary in your area. Might as well ask them about their dispensary if it is credible or not. Background check their dispensaries and if you have done it, go and completer you medical cannabis documents and start purchasing cannabis products for your medical needs.
D. Check out your local dailies and magazines about dispensaries near your – Local dailies can be a good source too of cannabis dispensaries. These establishments sometimes advertise what they offer through these kinds of medium. Aside from being cheap, dailies and newspapers just accept credible advertisements so you can really be sure that the ads that can be found on those mediums are really reliable.

E. Ask friends, members of the family and relatives – Lastly, your loved ones know best. So don’t get shy to seek advices and help from them. I’m sure one of them might have sought treatment from cannabis dispensaries.

A Brief History of Sacramento Medical Marijuana

posted in: Cannabis 0

According to history books, during the late years of 1970’s, cannabis patient named Mr. Robert Randall sued the federal government for arresting him for using medicinal cannabis to treat his glaucoma. He won the case and with this, the presiding judge ruled that Randall should use cannabis for health purposes and required the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to set up a program to allow cultivating, growing, purchasing and even selling cannabis.

The judge asked the FDA to allow growing this cannabis on a farm at the University of Mississippi and to distribute 300 cannabis cigarettes a month to Randall. Meanwhile, after several years, in 1992 to be exact, US President George H. W. Bush put an end to the program after the patient, Mr. Randall tried to make AIDS patients qualified for the said program as well.

Initially, there are thirteen people were already enrolled and were allowed to continue sniffing medical cannabis cigarettes to cure their medical conditions, then few years later, the US government just shipped medical cannabis cigarettes to merely seven medicinal cannabis patients. One cannabis patient named, Mr. Irvin Rosenfeld, who during those years has received medical cannabis attention from the program since 1982 to treat his rare bone tumors, urged the George W. Bush administration to reopen the program; however, in the end he was not successful though.

During those times, the state of Alaska is the only state in the United States where possession of up to one ounce is legal. Sacramento back then was not allowed to use this medical cannabis even as an alternative medicine to cure diseases.

Medical experts in Sacramento cited the dangers of cannabis even for medical purposes. They added that the lack of clinical research supporting its medicinal value to heal various medical conditions. Meanwhile, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (SAM) in March 2011 issued a white paper recommending a halt to using marijuana as a medicine in US states where it has been declared legal. But medical patients in the Sacramento region, who has been cured by this medical cannabis, beg to disagree about the proposal done by the (SAM). Medical cannabis patients defend the benefits they get through this medical cannabis, and they would rally behind the full legalization of this alternative medicine to cure their health problems.

During Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s reign as the Governor of California, medical cannabis has given so much attention. He prioritized the legalization of this alternative medicine to help medical patients who are looking for alternative treatment to cure their medical conditions.

WeedLifes All-Things-Cannabis News Site Launches an Exclusive Three-Part Look at the State of the Legal Marijuana Industry

posted in: Cannabis 0

Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) February 24, 2015

Will 2015 be remembered as the year the legal cannabis industry made its breakthrough with mainstream investors and business people? Or will this year just be a footnote; a breathing space ahead of the landmark marijuana legislation that many observers expect to be introduced by at least five states in 2016?

Those are just some of the issues being considered in an exclusive, three-part weekly news series on The State of the Cannabis Industry — being launched this week on Weedworthy.com, the all-things-marijuana news site that’s part of the WeedLife Social Network Marketplace.

Throughout the series, industry experts weigh in on a variety of issues – including the wildly different ways some states implement and enforce their legal cannabis laws, and whether the current political and cultural landscape is a help or hindrance for the legal marijuana movement.

They also examine the recent entrance of venture capital and the latest crop of institutional investors who are coming to Colorado and elsewhere, looking at the legal cannabis sector’s financial potential.

Troy Dayton, CEO and co-founder of The ArcView Group – which recently released the third edition of its State of the Legal Marijuana Markets report – tells WeedWorthy that one of the challenges facing the cannabis industry is how to best “marry the best ideals of activism with the best ideals of business.”

Another industry observer interviewed for the WeedWorthy articles notes that while there’s a lot of investment money flooding into the industry, not all of it is from high-rollers.

“At the lower levels there are plenty of people seeking investments in places like Washington State, where people are dying for investments, trying to get their retail pot shops open,” says Seattle-based Bruce Barcott, author of Weed the People, The Future of Legal Marijuana in America, which is scheduled for publication by Time Books in April.

Barcott also notes that ancillary companies, such as insurance and security groups, are looking to cash in on the new and rapidly-growing “green rush” created by the legal cannabis industry.

About Weedlife

The WeedLife Social Network Marketplace is a series of free-to-use websites specifically designed for the marijuana industry and its consumers – bringing news, sales information and other important cannabis-related data together, all under one online roof. WeedLife’s network of web site apps creates an online social marketplace of ideas, products and connections that work with both cannabis producers, distributors and dispensaries, as well as the tens of thousands of ancillary companies supporting the industry.

WeedLife also allows cannabis consumers and businesses to communicate and learn more about each other in a more rapid timeframe — helping them to better target their products, services and customer needs — as the cannabis sector’s consumer demographic changes, evolves and matures.

Novus Medical Detox Center Addresses Workplace Implications of Federal Medical Marijuana Ban Ending

posted in: Cannabis 0

New Port Richey, FL (PRWEB) February 23, 2015

Employers’ policies regarding workplace drug testing and employees’ cannabis use have recently fallen under question since Congress voted to end the federal ban on medical marijuana in December. In light of those questions, Novus Medical Detox Center analyzes the workplace implications of the policy change. The Florida drug detox facility emphasizes that under current law in most states, employers are still allowed to conduct drug testing and make hiring and firing decisions based on the results—regardless of whether a worker has a valid prescription for medical marijuana.

While the provision passed by Congress prohibits federal agents from prosecuting individuals who are buying or selling medical marijuana in accordance with state law, there are no federal restrictions on workplace policies concerning medical marijuana use. An employer’s right to enforce a drug-free workplace policy is left for the individual states to decide. So far, only a few states (including Arizona, Delaware and Minnesota) have statutes that prohibit employers from firing workers for a positive marijuana drug test if the employee holds a valid medical marijuana card; and in states without such prohibitions, the courts have generally ruled in favor of the employer. (1) Furthermore, because the federal government still classifies marijuana as a Schedule I drug, it must be treated as a prohibited substance in any workplace that is subject to federal regulations requiring drug testing of safety-sensitive workers or that receives federal funding. (2)

Novus previously analyzed the broader issue of substance abuse among American workers and found that drug use had a negative effect on employee productivity. Several studies have specifically explored the impact of marijuana use among workers and reported similar findings. One study noted that smoking cannabis impairs performance for a period of about four hours and presents an increased risk for injury or accidents when used before work or on the job. (3) Another study examined postal workers who tested positive for marijuana on a pre-employment drug test and found that they had 55% more industrial accidents, 85% more injuries and a 78% increase in absenteeism compared to workers who tested negative for marijuana use. (4)

“Given that marijuana has been shown to have a negative impact on job performance and safety, employers have a legitimate concern regarding its use in the workplace,” said Will Wesch, Director of Admissions for Novus Medical Detox Center. “Businesses still maintain the right to conduct drug testing among workers and job candidates. And while a few states offer protections for people who hold a valid medical marijuana prescription, the majority of states do not. This means employers may terminate employment or rescind job offers for anyone who tests positive for marijuana use, and legal precedent has been on the employers’ side.”

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, marijuana’s classification as a Schedule I substance means that it has “a high potential for abuse and potentially severe psychological and/or physical dependence.” (5) Wesch cautions that this potential for addiction may result in marijuana serving as a gateway to harder drugs: “Many people dismiss marijuana as a ‘soft drug’ and don’t see the harm in using it. But among the patients admitted to Novus for substance abuse treatment and detox, we’ve found that an overwhelming percentage of them started out using marijuana before graduating to cocaine, heroin, opiates or other illicit drugs.”

Wesch advises workers to be aware that marijuana use can jeopardize their employment, health and safety, and urges them to proceed with caution even in states when medical marijuana is legally permitted. For those using cannabis in addition to other prescription medications or illicit drugs, Novus offers customized substance abuse treatment programs that can help individuals overcome dependency and addiction. The Florida drug detox facility features a home-like residential setting, medically supervised care and a personalized treatment program that is designed to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal and contribute to a successful recovery.
