Health and Safety Signs – Keeping up with the legislation

posted in: Hemp Legislation 0

Under the UK and European Health and Safety legislation employers have a legal duty to comply with the requirements to display safety signage in the workplace.

This article provides an overview of the different types of safety signs and their meanings.

Prohibition Safety Signs

Shape and colour: Red circle with diagonal line
Meaning: You must NOT / Do NOT do / STOP
Examples: No cycling, No fishing, Do Not Use Mobile Phones

Black graphical symbols added inside the circle
Supplementary text may be added to provide a clearer message to the reader
Mandatory Safety Signs

Shape and colour: Solid blue circle
Meaning: You MUST do / Carry out action displayed on the sign
Examples: Clean up spillages, Keep locked, Wear safety harness

EC approved white symbols added inside the circle
Supplementary text may be added, if necessary, to provide a clearer message
Fire Safety Signs

Shape and colour: Sold red rectangle or square
Meaning: Locates fire equipment or personnel
Examples: Fire hose keep clear, Fire Alarm, Fire Point

White text and symbols on a red background
Supplementary text may be added, if necessary, to provide a clearer message
Safe Condition Safety Signs

Shape and colour: Solid green rectangle or square
Meaning: The safe way / Where to go in an emergency
Examples: Refuge point keep clear, Fire exit, Emergency evacuation lift

EC approved white symbols added inside shape
Supplementary text may be added, if necessary, to provide a clearer message
Note: “Text Only” signs are no longer legal. To comply with UK and European Health and Safety legislation safe condition signs must now contain a symbol.
Hazard Identification Safety Signs

Shape and colour: Yellow Triangle with Black Border
Meaning: Potential hazard within a designated area / Caution / Risk of Danger / Hazard ahead
Examples: Refuge point keep clear, Fire exit, Emergency evacuation lift

EC approved black graphical symbols added inside triangle
Supplementary text may be added, if necessary, to provide a clearer message

The hazard signs fall into 3 further categories: Danger Signs, Warning Signs and Caution Signs.

Danger signs indicate an immediately hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. Danger signs are, therefore, the most extreme form of hazard sign.

Warning signs indicate an immediately hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.

Caution signs indicate an immediately hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.

Industrial Hemp Legalized in Colorado – EnviroTextiles, Glenwood Springs, CO

posted in: Hemp Legislation 0

Glenwood Springs, Colorado (PRWEB) November 14, 2012

Colorado Amendment 64 passed, allowing for the cultivation of industrial hemp. Most of the current buzz about the amendment is about legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes in the state. What has not made the national headlines is that Amendment 64 also included legalizing industrial hemp.

Some key excerpts from Amendment 64 concerning hemp:

In the interest of enacting rational policies for the treatment of all variations of the cannabis plant, the people of Colorado further find and declare that industrial hemp should be regulated separately from strains of cannabis with higher Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentrations.
“Industrial Hemp” means the plant of the genus cannabis and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol concentration that does not exceed three-tenths percent on a dry weight basis.
“Marijuana” or “Marihuana” does not include Industrial Hemp, nor does it include fiber produced from the stalks, oil, or cake made from the seeds of the plant, sterilized seed of the plant which is capable of germination, or the weight of any other ingredient combined with marijuana to prepare topical or oral administrations, food, drink, or other product.
No later than July 1, 2014, the general assembly shall enact legislation governing the cultivation, processing and sale of Industrial Hemp.

Hemp is truly a wonder plant. There are over 25,000 confirmed uses for industrial hemp that include clothing, paper, plastic alternatives, building materials, and much more. Most products made from plastic, wood, or cotton can be made with hemp.

What does this mean for Colorado farmers? For starters, hemp requires very little water and no pesticides and herbicides. With drought conditions in the state, hemp is the most viable cash crop to plant under these conditions. In addition to ease of growing, one acre of hemp can provide the same amount of fiber as four acres of cotton. While hemp cultivation has been outlawed in the US, manufacturers of hemp products in the US have been thriving in recent years. Given the difficulty of importing raw hemp for manufacturing, our farmers already have immediate demand for their new crops in existing and expanding domestic markets. Simply put, farming industrial hemp will provide the US with manufacturing jobs, expand green initiatives, and provide our struggling agriculture industry with a cash crop that can be grown across the country.

EnviroTextiles is a pioneer in the Industrial Hemp industry, having overseen hemp cultivation and textile manufacturing in Romania, China, South Korea, Hungary, and Poland over the past 22 years. Conveniently located in Colorado, EnviroTextiles is poised to take full advantage of the ability to grow industrial hemp and is currently completing a vertical operation to produce hemp products in Colorado.

Houses.com Finds Increased Website Interest in Medical Cannabis Lenient States

posted in: Hemp Legislation 0

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) December 19, 2012

As the dust settles in the weeks following the Presidential Election, Americans are returning to life as usual. Gone are the political ads, debates and polls and most citizens are thankful to that end. However, the leading real estate website, Houses.com is detecting a small yet increasing trend under current in the ocean of politics. There is an amplified interest in the states where medical marijuana can be used without criminal consequences.

The voters in the states of Washington and Colorado have gone a step further and given their blessing to the recreational use of marijuana. Many other states have passed similar legislation that downgrade possession of the drug to the equivalent of running a stop sign. Each state will have different ordinances as to how much you can carry without the fear of facing a judge but, that aside there is a growing trend to legalize the use of medical marijuana in the United States.

The infographic illustrates (in green) the states that have legalized or passed laws allowing either the medical or recreational use of the plant. One eye opener was the increased number of homes for sale searches in New York and Maryland on Houses.com. Several states saw increases in the single digits; the searches in the tiny state of Maryland swelled to a full 14% and a whopping 22% in New York.

There are no hard and fast demographics for these online queries but when most people look for a home they generally have a stable income and the financial means to make the move. Widely distributed studies would lead most to believe it is the teenagers and the early 20s network that use marijuana. For more information, see the recent study by the American Medical Association: http://www.druglibrary.org/Schaffer/hemp/medical/block.htm. Nevertheless, those age groups by and large, don’t have access to the cash reserves needed to make major purchases like a home.

Although the increased traffic is by no means immense yet, the percentages of increases were enough to catch more than a few eyes. Founder and CEO of Houses.com, Richard Swerdlow commented on the recent findings, “The U.S. is traditionally conservative and cautious about the use of marijuana. Looking at the traffic by state breakdown paired with recent legislation on the drug suggests that citizens may want to see that changed.”

The inforgraphic clearly illustrates that the plain states, the Southeastern Seaboard and Southern states, are more conservative in their approaches to marijuana. Many citizens who are in favor of these relaxed measures are predicting it is just a matter of time before all states have some kind of legal verbiage for marijuana and its use.

Realtors in these 20+ states may want to keep their eyes on the marijuana legislation in their vicinity. When the topic is brought up in conversation; being prepared to answer client’s questions with an informed and educated voice may be an advantage.

Colorados Leading Cannabis Business Experts, Clover Leaf Consulting Hosted A64 Only Cannabis Video Symposium Series Third Event Thursday January 17th 2013.

posted in: Hemp Legislation 0

Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) January 19, 2013

On November 6th, Colorado passed Amendment 64 being the first U.S. state to regulate recreational cannabis in history. The passing of Amendment 64 has raised hopes of expanding marijuana business opportunities and tax revenues. In fact, the first forty million dollars annually will go to fund education. This historic event has generated excitement across the country, but also holds many questions on the implementation of a substance transitioning out of prohibition. This has a direct impact on current and future cannabis business owners.

The Cannabis Industry’s projected value is between $ 3 – $ 4 billion with an influx of “Ganjapreneurs” and investors seeking to capitalize on this major opportunity. Due to the fact that it is a black market legitimizing itself out of prohibition, the industry’s growth could be exponential with the passing of national legalization and implementation in the coming years. This does not take into account the ample business opportunities being developed for industrial hemp. “Colorado’s Cannabis Community has not only helped educate patients and validate the efficacy of medical cannabis, but it also created and stabilized a medical cannabis business model as well,” says Villano. “I believe HB1284 & Amendment 64 will eventually find common ground for regulation, offering tremendous business opportunities, investments, educational programs, job training and generate large economic stimulation in Colorado.”

The A64 Symposium will be highlighted into two segments.

“THC DUI” 7:00-7:45 pm

Since Colorado’s historic vote to legalize the regulation of recreational cannabis we have been unsure of the repercussions that would come from first time system errors, and miseducation for our leaders. We have fought this unreasonable bill tooth and nail and guess what…its back. Join Clover Leaf’s CEO Chloe Villano along with Mike Elliott, Esq., Sean McAllister Esq., Anne Toney P.C., Professor Daniel Rees, and The Colorado Department of Transportation as we discuss the THC DUI.

“Regulated Rules Task Force Update” 8:10 pm – 9:00 pm

The “Rule making” Govoner’s Task Force has been meeting all week long. We have been uncertain of our transitioning process as we expand the Cannabis Industry in Colorado, open more businesses, and make changes to our existing systems and procedures. What can we expect? What can we do? Join Clover Leaf’s Chloe Villano, along with our diverse panel of experts from the leading industry groups as we discuss the task force update and first draft development of the rule making process for Colorado’s regulated marijuana laws. Speakers include Bob Dill, Warren Edson, Robert Corry Jr, Meg Sanders, and Mike Elliott.

With the current legislative rules in flux, its important to get all the latest facts, figures as well as network with fellow industry professionals. Therefore Cloverleaf Consulting has provided the Industry manditory Information by hosting the following Amendment 64 Cannabis Business Symposium event series. This is the third event in the series. Clover Leaf will hold the Cannabis Business Symposiums the third thursday of every month at Casselmans. Future Symposium dates include: February 21, March 21, April 18, May 23, and June 20, 2013.

EnviroTextiles Hemp Products Listed with USDA Biopreferred Program

posted in: Hemp Legislation 0

Glenwood Springs, CO (PRWEB) March 01, 2013

EnviroTextiles, LLC, a Colorado based Industrial hemp and natural fiber manufacturer, is pleased to announce that it has earned approval from the USDA BioPreferred® Program as the only Hemp products manufacturer to qualify for listing their products in the Federal Procurement Preferred category. To quote the USDA’s website: “The purpose of the USDA BioPreferred® program is to promote the increased purchase and use of biobased products. The program is expected to promote economic development, creating new jobs and providing new markets for farm commodities.”

Barbara Filippone, President of EnviroTextiles, LLC believes, “The addition of hemp to a U.S. approved government program is a historic achievement for bio-diverse agriculture, and is blazing the path to legalizing the growth of industrial hemp in the United States. Legalization would provide our farmers with a drought resistant, pesticide-free, multipurpose, and value-added crop. Hemp has over 25,000 uses including variations of Food, Fuel, Feed, and Fiber.”

“While critics fear that hemp will have little economic impact, the reality is clear. With investment in farming, manufacturing, and jobs training, the US could experience a large resurgence in virtually all industries – farming, manufacturing, and export to name a few. The reach of the industrial hemp industry has incredible potential, with the ability to introduce new raw materials that are already successfully used for wide ranging products across the world. Industrial hemp would open up new markets and expand existing markets while leaving a very small carbon footprint. “

“It should be noted that the US is one of the world’s largest consumers of hemp derived products. However, we are unable to grow hemp locally and in all States until legislation currently under way is passed. The question is not if industrial hemp will have a positive impact in the U.S. – the question is will we see the opportunity to grow and develop this commodity within our own borders.“

EnviroTextiles is a woman-owned industrial hemp and natural fiber manufacturing company based in Glenwood Springs, CO, and is the largest importer of hemp textiles in the U.S. Barbara Filippone, founder and president of EnviroTextiles, has created thousands of jobs across the globe in her 37 years of developments surrounding natural fiber production and product development. She has developed industry in India, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Mexico, South Korea, and China, with China presently providing hemp to EnviroTextiles for their products. Being a leading expert in processing and economic development, EnviroTextiles proudly sells their products in the U.S. and to over 70 countries worldwide.

EnviroTextiles presently has offices in the US, China, and Mexico, and focuses on natural fiber products and economic development in regions with commodity levels of various natural fibers. “Being one of the first companies to be USDA Bio-Preferred qualified and having products listed for Federal Procurement Preferred status, EnviroTextiles is leading the way for investment in bio-diversity, non-GMO farming, and job creation.”, Filippone stated.

Please also note, EnviroTextiles is excited to announce we celebrated our 12th year in business on February 15th, 2013. Thanks to all that have supported us over the years!

Lab Testing Reveals EnviroTextile’s Hemp Fabric Stops the Spread of Staph Bacteria

posted in: Hemp Legislation 0

Glenwood Springs, CO (PRWEB) June 20, 2013

Rampant staph infections continue to cost lives unnecessarily. One powerful weapon to fight this scourge is being successfully deployed by China’s military: industrial hemp. Staph is spread by direct contact and by touching items that are contaminated such as towels, sheets, privacy curtains, and clothing. As noted by the San Francisco Chronicle, “It is estimated that each year 2 million Americans become infected during hospital stays, and at least 90,000 of them die. MRSA (an antibiotic resistant strain of staph) is a leading cause of hospital-borne infections.” One of the most important recent discoveries is hemp’s ability to kill surface bacteria, while cotton, polyester, and polyethelene allow it to remain on their surfaces for up to months at a time.

Unknown to many, hemp fabrics exist in today’s market that can replace each of these transmission prone hospital items. Technological improvements for hemp textile development began in the early 90s when EnviroTextile’s lead textile engineer, Barbara Filippone, began working with hemp in China. To date, the company has over 100 hemp and hemp blended fabrics available to suit any traditional fabric application. In addition to staph resistance, other tests show hemp fabrics superior resistance to UV and infrared wavelengths, providing multiple applications for military use.

Hemp fabric was tested against two bacteria strains, Staphylococcus Aureus (staph) and Klebsiella Pneumoniae (pneumonia). The fabric tested was a hemp blend, 60% hemp and 40% rayon. The staph test sample was already 98.5% bacteria free during the first measurement of the testing, while the pneumonia fabric sample was 65.1% bacteria free. These results, even prior to the tests completion, clearly display the fabrics unique capability at killing bacteria and reducing their spread. This is especially imperative for healthcare facilities.

For infrared testing, the same hemp blend was analyzed resulting in a test result of 0.893, or nearly 90% resistant. Different blended fabrics have the potential to increase the percentage of this initial test, especially fabrics with a higher percentage of hemp. Many of hemp’s applications will benefit our military, and EnviroTextile’s hemp fabrics have recently been approved by the USDA as Federally Preferred for Procurement under their BioPreferred Program.

Thirty one states have introduced pro-hemp legislation and 19 have passed pro-hemp legislation. The potential for military and national adoption of hemp appears to be moving forward expeditiously considering a decade’s long ban. As science continues to “rediscover” the benefits of hemp for society, the solution is emerging from the fog of prohibition. Hemp is no longer an ancient fiber and it is well on its way to be the future of fabric.

EnviroTextiles is woman-owned industrial hemp and natural fiber manufacturing company with their headquarters in Glenwood Springs, CO, and is the largest manufacturer/importer of hemp and natural fiber textiles and products in the United States. EnviroTextiles proudly sells their products in the U.S. and to over 70 countries worldwide. The company presently has their presence in the US, China, and Mexico, and focuses on natural fiber resources and economic development in regions with commodity levels of various natural fibers.
