Tents were traditionally made of canvas which is a tough, course fabric that may be made of cotton or linen; it was also once made of hemp which is the fiber of the cannabis plant. Because of its durability, canvas is also used for painting, sails, and trampolines. It is good for tents because of its ability to protect occupants from wind, precipitation, and sunlight.

 Modern tents are now made of waterproof fabric called a flysheet. Varying tents have more than one layer of flysheets. Those used in cool regions have insulation mechanisms. These tents may also be equipped with ventilation, windows or air vents, and even a sort of porch. These are for tents used for camping and temporary shelter like small outdoor gatherings.

 There are actually different tent shapes. For example, the dome-shaped tent is the most common for camping; dome tents vary in size depending of the number of occupants. The largest is the family-sized tent that can accommodate as many as five. A-framed tents were previously common, but were later modified for optimum functionality.

 Tent rental  companies specialize in tents called marquees, those made especially for big events like weddings, parties, or entertainment. These tents are very large and made of canvas or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), also known as vinyl. These are very strong and supported by PVC, steel, or iron posts.

 Some marquees are simply huge roof tents or gazebo tents like the Indian shamiana, which is held up with straight metal, wood, or plastic posts. Some of these are stretch tents that have aluminum or bamboo poles with nylon and polyester fabric. These stretch tents are used in South Africa and Australia tent rental companies.

 Marquees also vary in size and design. Tent rental companies usually provide different marquee designs. The tent also comes with interior design services, depending on the event; dining tables, a dance floor and a stage are some of the optional internal additions. If enclosed, the tent is equipped with ventilation and air conditioning systems to reduce condensation within the tent. Colors for the tent may vary; white is common, but some tent rental companies offer tents of other colors.
