Business Science

Business as a science, compared to the science of war, is still rather young. While Sun Tzu already 2400 years ago formulated his important military ‘management’ doctrines, it took nearly these same 2400 years before a retired French mining engineer, Fayol (1841-1925), for the first time in history wrote a paper on the tasks of the manager in a business firm. In 1916 he published in the Bulletin de la Société de l’Industrie Minérale an article on « Administration Industrielle Générale, Prévoyance, organisation, commandement, coordination, et controlé (1).The French Military establishment quickly understood that these ideas about ‘administration’ could also be useful in the military context. At the age of 71 they invited Fayol to lecture at their famous ‘École Superieure de la Guerre’(2).

If the military are inclined to learn from business theories, then vice versa business can learn from the military.

Probably because of the harsher global competition the trend can be noticed that more and more senior managers are trying to protect their firms against, or even counter, the competition by getting inspiration from military principles. In particular competing with developing (Asian) countries, either through their low cost of labour or through a steep technological ascend, requires a broad understanding of the environment, the strengths and weaknesses of the competition, of the nature of one’s own forces and understanding the current situation to secure the future of the firm. Overcoming the Asian competition is the challenge of the present day European firm and the steady development of the European Union can be a stimulating power in this process. Business as a science is about: a strategic doctrine, planning, critical success factors, tactics, intelligence, the moral component and last but not least to leadership.

New York City: the place where over a hundred different languages are spoken daily and the undisputed capital of the arts. What better city in the world for college students to come to in order to study Liberal Arts?

That is to say, language and its allied fields, such as literature and linguistics, film, theatre, radio, journalism, television and video as well as the fine arts that include music and dance, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, architecture, and design.

For complete details about study in uk, visit abroad education corner.

New York City boasts over a dozen private universities in addition to branches of the State University of New York and the 21 – campus City University of New York. International students are invited to apply to all of these schools. Indeed, the student populations of these campuses reflect the international quality of life in the City at large.

If you are interested in the Fine Arts, you will find programs in which you can study art history, as well as painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture, often with professional artists and designers whose work is acknowledged here around the world. Not only will you be able to create your own works in a studio space, but you will have as your resource and inspiration the art housed in the dozens of museums and galleries that have made New York the art centre of the world.

If it is the world of stage drama or cinema that interests you, you can find academic programs that offer courses in acting, screen-writing, stage directing, film directing, cinematography, animated film, set design, and video production. Get “hands-on” experience with a camera or stage crew while studying with teachers who are also professional actors, writers and directors. The resources in New York City for drama and film students are legion: the dozens of theatres on and off Broadway, and also the retrospective showing and film archives at museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the Moving Image.

Journalism students will find courses in news reporting and writing, news editing, newspaper production, and broadcast journalism. Those interested in other aspects of television will find courses in media systems and telecommunications. As a resource they will find many television studios to visit as well the Museum of Broadcasting.

Students of music and dance will likewise find themselves with a wide variety of opportunities. The City’s colleges and universities offer courses in music history, ethnomusicology, music theory, harmony, and counterpoint, music therapy, techniques of conventional composition as well as composition for jazz and electronic music, musical performance art and conducting, computer techniques for music research.

Students of dance can find courses in: ballet, jazz, modern dance, dance therapy, theatre-dance, improvisation and choreography. New York, of course, is home to highly acclaimed dance companies from the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre Alvin Ailey Dance Company to the dozens of small companies that perform here throughout the year.

New York is also the ideal place for students interested in Ethnic Studies. Colleges and universities here offer programs that explore the languages and cultures of peoples who have settled in New York and made it their home while synthesizing the traditions of their lands of origin with those of American society. Here one finds programs in: African-American Studies, a field that surveys the history and culture of African, Afro-American, and Afro-Caribbean peoples, Irish Studies in which you can learn Irish as well as examine the social, religious, and political factors that have made this ethnic group an important one in New York from the colonial period to the present, in Italian-American Studies which draws on the fields of history, literature, art, music, sociology, and political science to give a holistic view of Italian-Americans, in Jewish Studies where you can gain an understanding of the history, politics, folklore, languages and literature of the Jewish people.

Finally it should be said that a year of living fully in New York City is the ultimate experience of the Liberal Arts. With so many concerts, plays, films, art exhibitions, and ethnic festivals to enjoy, it is difficult not to be immersed in the languages and arts of the world.

Science of food

Most people are unaware that the Food Industry is the largest manufacturing industry in the UK, but this is so. It is an industry, moreover, which is becoming increasingly dependent upon the application of science in order to understand and control raw materials, processes and products.

For complete details about study in uk, visit abroad education corner.

Legislation, both UK and European, now largely controls the ways in which foods are produced and the ways in which food products must be described and labelled. The result of all this is that the industry is becoming more and more reliant on scientists, food scientists, to maintain and improve food quality and ensure legislative compliance.

Food Science deals with the structure and behaviour of food materials, and the changes which occur at the macro and the molecular level in foods when they are stored or processed. Such changes are particularly important when heat is employed in commercial operations or when food is cooked in the home. A food scientist must understand the scientific basis of the technical processes used to produce and prepare foods, whether these processes are traditional, such as the baking of bread, or involve modern technology such as the use of microwave ovens. A food scientist must also understand a number of fundamental pure science subjects, particularly chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and mathematics and statistics and be able to apply such knowledge to foods and their behaviour.

For example, chemical analysis – relying less nowadays on ‘wet chemical’ methods and increasingly on sophisticated instrumental techniques such as various forms of spectroscopy and chromatography – is essential, not only to control food quality, but also to derive the nutritional and other information which must appear on packaging labels. Organic chemistry is required to understand the behaviour of those molecules (usually of molecular weight below 400 daltons) which are present and which variously contribute to nutritive quality and influence properties such as colour, flavour and resistance to oxidative deterioration. Biochemistry forms the basis for understanding the role of enzymes in foods. Enzymes in foods are responsible for phenomena as diverse as the ripening of fruits, ripening of cheeses, post-mortem changes in meats and deterioration in many foods upon storage. A food scientist must understand and seek to control such changes.

The appearance and texture of a food is extremely important, it must be attractive if the food is to be purchased and consumed with pleasure and the experience repeated. These attributes can be understood through the application of physics and physical chemistry. Similarly, phenomena such as the elasticity of dough (essential to the production of bread) and the specific characteristics of colloids (e.g. milk) and gels (e.g. table jellies) can be understood and exploited through the application of physical sciences.

Microbiology is a vitally important foundation of food science, not only because of the hazard to health which arises from any lack of hygiene when food is handled, but also because a controlled use of micro-organisms is essential to the production of a wide range of foods and beverages such as cheese, yoghurt, bread, wine and beer.

Food additives have rightly become of great concern to the general public. However, the use of these substances (which imitate the action of natural food constituents) is very strictly controlled and the food scientist must understand what substances are allowed, when their use is justified, how they function and how their presence may be established and measured.

Food technology, as distinct from food science, relates to the practicalities of food preservation and the ‘manufacture’ of a large and diverse range of good products. The food technologist is more concerned with the practical operation of food processing equipment and carrying out processes than understanding in depth the underlying science which governs the processes being carried out. However, it is not possible to draw a hard and fast line between the two disciplines – the food technologist must understand much of the science which underpins the technology and the scientist, in turn, must be able to apply scientific knowledge to technological operations.

Most food science university courses include an element of food technology (e.g. Nottingham University, Leeds University – where we prefer the term ‘food processing’) and some degree of specialisation in technology may be possible, a certain amount of science is , of course, essential for food technologists and is included in all such courses. A number of institutions (e.g. Reading University) offer separate courses in food science and food technology. Food technology courses frequently include an industrial placement (sandwich courses) as do some food science courses.

Combined Honours or Joint Honours degree courses, in which food science can be coupled with another, usually related, discipline such as biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology or nutrition, are offered by a number of traditional universities (e.g. Leeds, Reading, Surrey) and, with the absorption of polytechnics and certain colleges into the university sector, the number of available food science, food technology and related courses has expanded somewhat in recent years.

Food science and food technology are vocational courses and the relatively small number of courses available means that, in most years, the supply of good graduates in the two disciplines is less than that required to meet the demand so that employment prospects remain excellent. Careers are varied and challenging and range from those in food production through quality control to fundamental research. It should also be remembered that most food production companies are specialists and therefore their products, and the associated science, differ from company to company.

Running Science

posted in: Cannabis Science 0

For the fear of robbers, there were no fundamental reasons. Anybody who deserves this title should be clear that whether a male or a female, she or he would not bring anything while running. Now that there were many filled wallets and jewelry person, so why you grab a water of victims. In addition, the robbers could find that there were so many people sitting on a chair or just strolling, why to pick up a floating target. And she even could run ahead of you. However, you’d better not run in a remote area after dark.
Even this one was not static. There was a woman once ran along the river park for a few years in New York and she was not troubled by anyone. Some people just like to do bad things. You don’t have to put them in teams, you just need to keep them far away from you. A lot of methods can keep them far away from you. Once I saw a woman in Central Park holding a four inches long needle, there was no cap on it. She was terrible, because she seemed to prick people at any time. The men who ran in the same track with her all kept far away. I knew I was the kind of person. Some women also carried a big stick in their hands when they went out to run. When some people planned to run, they would bring a beating dog or a whistle with them. Running with another person, whether a man or a woman, this would be an effective method of deterrence. Running with big dog also could play such a role.
In fear of the body damage, it was another worry in women’s heart. As what I have said in the third chapter. Not long ago, a doctor who wrote in the “Playboy” magazine that jogging was the most dangerous form of sport. He said that for women, it could make the uterus dislocate and the ligament of breast apart. This made he breast like the deflated gas balloon, which was hanged down. I have talked these dangers with many doctors; they all have expressed their bewilderment. It was impossible to find a justified basis on the medical literature. Instead, women said that their breasts became stronger after running. It was because that the movement of the two arms made the chest muscles stronger. I talked with many women, but nobody said that there was something wrong with their uteruses.
Many women feared that their muscles would become stiff, it seemed like a block of hard lump. The fact was that women runners and men runners were the same, their muscles would never become stiff. You can look at a woman’s legs carefully when you see a woman running on a road. You will see the soft and beautiful shape of long muscles, rather than uplift muscles. And, no matter how laborious her exercise program is, how long a time she takes and how fast her speed is, her leg muscles always keep it that way.
In order to improve the running result, some women even likes to try the weightlifting. However, Jack Weir Mo who worked in the National Athletic Health Institute pointed out that those strong muscles did not mean big chunks. He said:” with the illusion of the comic books, the bony child may be as strong as a villain who put sand on their faces, even stronger than a villain”. Weir Mo, who was famous for working for female runners said that some women increased more than forty-four percent of strength, but no muscles increased.

Reefer Madness/The Burning Question (1936)
Cannabis Science
Although produced as a serious anti-drug exploitation film, Reefer Madness became a cult comedy hit during the late 1960s and 1970s. It was one of the earliest hits during the golden age of the "midnight movie" in which theaters, especially those near colleges, would run the film at special screenings late at night during weekends.

Trivia

If you still frame the newspaper which flashes on screen just before the verdict is announced at the end of the film, underneath the headline is another front-page news story which bears the smaller headline: "DICK TRACY, G-MAN, IN SENSATIONAL RAID".

The movie theater marquee reading "Terry Rooney in ‘Any Old Love’", is a standing set from the picture Something to Sing About (1937).

Dwain Esper unsuccessfully sued a distribution company in the 1960s over the film rights, claiming that he had produced the film for the U.S. Army, and that he was the legal copyright owner. However, he was unable to support his claims, and lost the case.

Stars Dorothy Short (Mary) and Dave O’Brien (Ralph) were married the year this film was released (1936).

A special-edition DVD of the film was released in 2004, with an outrageously non-realistic colorization (the various characters who smoke all exhale brightly colored pastel smoke) and a satirical commentary track by Michael J. Nelson of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (1988).

Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005) won a bunch of awards and was nominated for many more. It won an Emmy in 2005 for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for the song: "Mary Jane/Mary Lane". It was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Choreography and nominated for another for Outstanding Makeup for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Non-Prosthetic). Also in 2005, it won a Satellite Award for Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television (Kristen Bell ) and another for Outstanding Motion Picture Made for Television. It was nominated for a Satellite Award for Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television (Christian Campbell). In 2006 it was nominated for a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing in Television Long Form – Dialogue and Automated Dialogue Replacement. Also in 2006, it was nominated for the ASC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Movies of the Week/Mini-Series’/Pilot. It was nominated in 2006 for an Eddie for Best Edited Miniseries or Motion Picture for Non-Commercial Television.

Science Slam: How Cannabis Can Treat the Epileptic Brain

‘How cannabis can treat the epileptic brain’

Some non-psychoactive compounds from the cannabis plant can be used to treat epilepsy, but we still don’t know how they work as anti-epileptic drugs. Studying the ways in which brain cells communicate with each other, and how this is changed in an epileptic brain, could be the key to understanding why some cannabinoids have anti-epileptic properties.
